Learn what stainless steel is in simple terms and what that means for you

What you need to know:

  • Stainless Steel is a durable, tarnish-resistant metal
  • It's hypoallergenic (most piercings are made of stainless steel)
  • This will be a good choice for people who wear their jewellery day and night.

Whats it made of?

  • A durable tarnish-resistant metal
  • This is an alloy (mix of metals) consisting primarily of Iron and Chromium
  • Although this sounds very science-y, stainless steel is non-tarnish and is extremely hard-wearing.
  • Contains a minute amount of nickel
  • This will be a good choice for people who wear their jewellery day and night.

Why is it different to other metals?

  • Stainless Steel will not turn green and easily tarnish
  • Read our complete metals guide for more information about other metals that we stock
  • If websites don't specify what metal the jewellery is made of, or if a piece of jewellery is only described as "plated" without specifying it, it is likely a metal alloy.
  • It is always best to contact the company if you are unsure or need more information.

How to look after your jewellery

  • Ensuring Stainless Steel looks its best, we recommend the following:
  • Removing while showering or swimming
  • Keep your jewellery away from harsh chemicals

FYI: Plated jewellery

  • It is the metal underneath the plating that determines its quality.

  • Gold-plated jewellery requires slightly more care to ensure the gold continues to look new.

  • To ensure the colour does not dull or eventually fade (after continual wear) keep your jewellery away from water / perfumed products/chemicals.
